The phylloxera crisis started in France in 1865 and reached the cognac region in 1872 wher in the course of approximately ten years it destroyed over 80% of the vineyards. At the end of the 1890s a remey was found: vines from Texas (US) that were resistent against the louse were imported. It took many years to replant the vineyards and even today the number of hectares planted with vines has still not reached the same amount as it had before the plague.
