My Bottles list — 22 Comments

  1. What a great web site you have!! A tremendous wealth of knowledge and history. I really enjoyed the resource to try and investigate a Dennis Mounie Gold Leaf Cognac bottle that i have inherited from my grandfather. Your Bottle Catalogue has something similar under Gold Leaf Group 1e: Aberrant shaped bottles, but the words GOLD LEAF are not written in red on my bottle. My bottle has GL embossed in the glass above the front label, indicates 4/5 quart, and the Federal Law forbids sal or re-use of this bottle. The tax seal indicates series 112. Can you tell me when you think this was made and what it might be worth in unopened and sealed condition?? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.

    G

    • The bottle does indeed look a bit like the third bottle under ‘abnormally shaped bottles’.
Your bottle is post 1961, which is when 111 changed to 112. And it is probably early 1960s as it has the “Federal Law forbids’ phrase which formally disappeared around 1964. But bottles from 1970 have been seen with that phrase still on them.
Gold Leaf is comparable with 3 stars, so it is the lowest quality. And while some online sites charge very high prices, at an auction I would expect around €50-60.
      Kind regards,
      Ton
PM. Thanks for the photo, I will add it to the catalogue.

  2. Hello, Ton,
regarding your list of bottles: what does the number written after the date mean (mostly 10 or 9)?
Love you website, Jim Pearson mentioned it in fb Cognac Lovers.
    Regards, Roman

    • Hi Roman,
The 9 or 10 means I appreciated that one very much and gave it that score (out of 10). Very personal of course.
      Regards,
      Ton

      • Hi Ton,
yes, that was also my guess. Although the taste and the preferences differ from person to person it does give additional info, especially if we share similar preferences.
Btw – the last one must be really exceptional, right?
        Regards,
        Roman

  3. Really cool, such a respectable Cognac fan both in theory and practice. It is a giant colletion with my admiration. Hahah only one thing, I don’t see any of the brands is (are) your favorite. Normally collectors have partiality for some particular brands, e.g. me, show favouritism to 1. Delamain, 2. Hennessy (who doesn’t, sigh), 3. A. E. Dor

  4. Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew the price or where to get a bottle of Jean Claude Roy, Premier Cru Du Cognac, Flamme Del Homandie, 70cl.

I am asking on behalf of a friend, many thanks for any information.

  5. Hello, you have a great and extremely useful website, thank you for this!
Regarding this lists – I do not see any common brands and ages like Martell Medaillon, Remy Martin VSOP etc.
I reckon – sure you did tasted them just didn’t include the common items in your list, right?

Do you have any all-time preferences? Like, if you were departing to an island and could take only 5 bottles with you?

Thank you once again for your work!

    • Hi Tim,

Thanks for the compliments. If you scroll through the list you’ll see that I have tasted all the common brands, but you are right, not the more common ages. Why? Because I think older cognacs are so much more interesting to taste. Usually the three star and VS qualities of today are not very suitable to drink straight (there are some exceptions). I usually start with XO and up. The VSOP is in between and can be good, but not as complex as older cognacs.
When I visit a cognac producer (mostly bouilleurs de cru and not the well-known houses), they always start with letting you taste their VS and VSOP. So I have tasted quite a lot of them, but I did not include them in my list. Only when I have had the whole bottle (like Frapin VS) it is on the list.

My top 5? It changes from time to time.
I think I must restrict the choice to affordable cognacs, because it has always been my policy not to buy extremely expensive bottles.
It would be (not in order of best first): Audry Mémorial fine champagne, Chateau de Beaulon XO vintage 1971 fins bois, Laurent Merlin Hors Pair petite champagne, Navarre Vieille Réserve grande champagne, Marcel Ragnaud Florilège grande champagne.
(Some of them are becoming more expensive because they are not for sale in a regular shop anymore.)

If price is not a problem I would consider: Bouron Sublime, Vallein Tercinier rue 34, Hennessy Richard, AE Dor no. 11, Delamain 1960.

There are so many to choose from!

      Kind regards,
      Ton

      • Thanks Ton,
I do realize that VS/VSOP do not offer full potential of a cognac house. Given that we are limited in total amount of alcohol we can consume without impact on health and lifestyle, it’s better to not waste time with VS/VSOP and proceed to the better spirits. But I am asking about these common VSOPs/Napoleons, however, because I mean old stock, not new makes. This is not only my opinion that VSOP cognacs produced in 1960x-1980s were comparable to today’s XO. I tried Martell Medaillon from 70s and was amazed how tasty it is, and modern VSOPs don’t have a chance! Grass was greener, you know!
Thank you for the shortlist, most of the names I haven’t heard yet.. As I am only starting my cognac journey and look at these: what do you think of more affordable, and perhaps somehow underrated, VSOP or Napoleon offerings of 60-70s such as Bisquit, Hine, Hubert de Polignac, Otard, Gaston de Lagrange etc?
        Thank you.

        • I have had the opporutiny to try some old bottles. They are pretty good, but very often they also have a so called ‘old bottle flavour’ that is not so nice. Less vibrant, a little musty.

      • Hi Ton. Have you tried the Vallein Tercinier Conjugaison 49? How does it compare to the rue 34? Thanks. Great website by the way. Fantastic source of information.

        • Hi Fuzhou,
Yes I did once had a little sip of the cojugaison and I was very impressed by it, but not so much as by the Rue 34. I did not make any notes though and it was some years ago now.
The conjugaison was in a VT line-up tasting session held by the Roudiers in Belgium, the Rue 34 was with a friend and I had the opportunity to try more than one glass. So the ambiance comes into play too.

          • That sounds wonderful. It looks like that the rue 34 is a much limited product, so it’s a rarer bottle than the 49 too. I wish we have chance to do tastings with these artisanal producers in the States. VT keeps a low profile here.

      • I want to thank you for these suggestions. I am a beginner so to say and from your suggestions list above I was able to buy Navarre Vieille Réserve and Audry Mémorial and I’m really liking both of them. Out of the two the Navarre is pure heaven. Hands down the best thing I ever drank (I guess that means I really like Rancio).

If you have any more suggestions or general advice I’d love to hear it.

        Thanks again!

  6. Love your list, Ton!
Who organised the tastings in NOV 2011 and Jan 2012?
Sometimes you add a number after the tasting date. Is that a grade for what you think about the tasting?
    Best regards,
    Brynjar
