Charente Inferieure is the former name of Charente-Maritime. They changed it in 1941 because of the negative connotation of the word inferieure. So the Charente region consists of two departements: Charente in the east and Charente-Maritime in the west.
Charente and Charente-Maritime are now part of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, an administrative region, formed in 2016 out of the former three regions: Aquitanië, Limousin and Poitou-Charentes.
