In the year 280 Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus grants the rights to the Gauls to own vineyards and to make wine. Emperor Titus Flavius Domitianus had forbidden to cultivate wine in Western-Europe in the year 92 AD. According to other sources (Marvaud) it was in the year 85 AD, so a few years sooner.

Around the year 280 the vineyards in Saintonge really started to expand.
