It is hard to believe, but the numbers dropped from 280.000 to a mere 40.000 hectares!
A few areas were spared, notably some very fine vineyards in the Borderies and the Pays Bas, north of the city of Cognac. The louse did not thrive well in the moist soil of these areas.
